Inglewood Church (1896-?)
The Gospel Messenger April 11, 1896 page 235 Vol. 35 No. 15 Southern California News. At the dawn of 1890 the churches at Covina and Conejo were the only organizations of the Brethren in Southern California. In 1891 the Lordsburg church came into existence; then the Tropico church, next the Egan church in Riverside County. March 24 the Inglewood church was duly organized at Inglewood, near Los Angeles, with twenty-eight members within her bounds, three of whom are ministers. Eld. Wm. J. Thomas, who resides here, has charge. Last September the writer located here, being the first member in this village. In December brethren Wm. J. Thomas, Percy Thomas, Isaac Thomas and their families arrived. These were followed by J. F. Thomas, C. A. Ives and their families, and Bro. A. Forbes, Sister Trilly Roush also came with Bro. Isaac Thomas. James F. Thomas was chosen deacon, Mary Thomas, Clerk, and Elson Thomas, Treasurer. Eld. A Hutchison will begin a series of meetings here the evening of March 27. At this writing Eld. Joseph Trostle, of Ida, Iowa, is here and Eld. L. S. Snyder, of Missouri Valley, Iowa, is expected in a few days. This church will likely find 0pen doors to preach at Santa Monica and Redonda, two seaport towns near us. and there is some indication of a colony of members being planted at Gardena, eight miles south of this place. All this if the Lord will. M. M. Eshelman, Inglewood, Cal.
The Gospel Messenger Nov. 26, 1898 page 749 Vol. 36 No. 47 Inglewood.—We have enjoyed a very pleasant and profitable series of meetings conducted by Bro. E. A. Miller. He began preaching Oct. 23 and continued until Nov. 3. Four were added by baptism. We held our Communion meeting Oct. 29. About fifty members communed. Bro. Paul Lehmer preached the examination sermon. Eld. P. S. Myers officiated. On Sunday, Oct. 30, an election for a minister and deacon was held resulting in the choice of Bro. Wm. H. Neher for minister and Bro. Dewey Finch for deacon, who were duly installed by Bro. J. W. Trostle. Our little band now consist of thirty-four members. – Mary Thomas, Nov. 11
The Gospel Messenger Nov. 17, 1923 page 732 Vol. 73 No. 46 Inglewood.—One of the notable events in the history of this church took place Oct. M, when our new building was dedicated. Befitting the occasion, a Rally Day service was held in the morning, with an address by the pastor, Bro. Wertenbaker. Bro. Diehl, of Beaver, Iowa, who takes charge for a while, during the pastor's absence, gave an interesting talk to the children. After the social hour at noon the dedicatory services opened at 2: 30. Rev. Stone, president of the Ministerial Association of Ingle wood, gave a fitting address, in behalf of the churches, in his friendly, whole-hearted way. He said that this is a day of church building; our city is growing in numbers and homes, and the church should keep pace with the times, in preparing places where people may meet for the refreshing of their "souls. This church was organized March 24, 1896, holding services in the Inglewood Hotel. As they grew in numbers, a church was built and dedicated June 30. 1901. This was on Market Street, which has now become a business street, so the property was sold, which netted us a goodly sum and enabled us to erect an up-to-date church. Bro. Zimmerman, pastor of the Long Beach church, delivered the principal sermon, full of wholesome advice. He said if the church body docs not live a life of service, there had better be no building. Wm. J. Thomas and wife and Sister Susan Thomas—three members resent at the organization—attended these services also. Brethren, intending to come to California to live, should visit this city before selecting a permanent home. We are six miles from the Pacific, with a delightful climate. By purchasing a book of tickets, we can go to Los Angeles on a five cent fare for an hour's ride. We also have a live Chamber of Commerce, where literature can be obtained, and information upon application.—Mrs. Ella E. Buckwalter, Inglewood, Calif., Nov. 3.
